The 501st Joint Fighter Wing "Strike Witches" is a specialist unit comprised of several of the greatest aces of its time, as well as the first established Joint Fighter Wing.

The unit was first stationed in Britannia under the jurisdiction of the Western World Headquarters (under the command of Air Chief Marshal Trevor Maloney) until the Liberation of Gallia, after which it was disbanded.

The unit was reformed at the order of Air Marshal Adolfine Galland and based in Romagna, on an island in the Adriatic Sea.

Following a large-scale assault by the Neuroi on the Rhine, the unit has been reformed once again to push towards Berlin.

Service History

The founding members of the 501st were Sakamoto Mio, Minna-Dietlinde Wilcke, Perrine H. Clostermann, Gertrud Barkhorn, Erica Hartmann, Laura Toth, Suwa Masuzu, Petra Danford, and Heinrike Langer. Laura was later transferred to the Isle of Wight Detachment Group, but what happened to Masuzu and the three others after that is unknown. In the early days of its establishment, Gertrud was in a state of mental instability, so there was a lot of personnel turnover, and half of the founding members had left the corps at the start of the first period (of the Royal Air Force). Despite the sabotage of Air Chief Marshal Trevor Maloney, the fact that Gertrud had practically kicked Laura out had an impact, and the personnel recruitment did not go well. It was stolen by Gundula Rall behind the scenes and suffered a series of hardships, and Mio was in a critical situation in a human sense to the extent that she was forced to look for a newcomer in her home country).

From 1942 to 1944, the 501st was part of the Western General Headquarters and was focused on the defence of Britannia and the recovery of Gallia. Its base was in the Strait of Dover, Britannia. Around October 1944, the unit was temporarily disbanded by Air Chief Marshal Maloney, who did not like witches and wanted the Warlock to replace it. Maloney's group was detained by Minna and other, and the Strike Witches gathered again at the base. After the Warlock incident and the Gallian hive was destroyed, the 501st was officially disbanded with the liberation of Gallia.

Six months later, around the spring of 1945, a Super Hive of Neuroi suddenly appeared in Venezia, and Venezia was occupied. Former 501st members gathered in the Adriatic Sea to form the Strike Witches again. A new base was built on the site of ruins near Romagna in order to fill the void left by the 504th Joint Fighter Wing, which was destroyed during the retreat from Venezia. During the final operation "Operation Mars" against the Venezian Super Hive, it was tasked with escorting the battleship Yamato and buying time until the Neuroifization was completed. Ultimately, thanks to Miyafuji Yoshika and Mio's efforts, the Venezian Super Hive was destroyed and Venice was liberated. However, Yoshika and Mio lost their magic powers in this battle. With this, the Strike Witches was disbanded again.

Some months later, after the liberation of Venezia, there was no Neuroi movement in Karlsland for half a month, but Heidemarie W. Schnaufer in the skies above Belgica, and Charlotte E. Yeager and others in Venezia slipped through the surveillance net and engaged in combat with the Neuroi that suddenly appeared. However, both of the Neuroi that appeared were out of their sphere of influence, so Minna became more wary that there might be a new Neuroi nest. On the other hand, Yoshika, who has become an ordinary human civilian, visited Europe with Hattori Shizuka to study at a medical school in Helvetia.

However, many Neuroi emerged from the ground in Belgica, and a large-scale offensive of the Neuroi began. At the same time, radio waves were jammed all at once, so they were forced to struggle alone in various places and were outnumbered. Former 501st members, including Yoshika, gathered again in Belgica, and the 501st was unofficially temporarily reactivated again to destroy a Neuroi mothership that had attacked from Karlsland.

Some time later, around the winter of 1945, a large-scale counterattack operation "Operation Southwind" was planned for the liberation of Berlin, but the 501st JFW was still in the preparation stage. Also, Mio, who had lost her magic powers, was no longer part of the Strike Witches. While Yoshika struggled alone with the Neuroi, who manipulated the iceberg approaching Antwerp, everyone gathered one after another and defeated said Neuroi, but the iceberg separated from the Neuroi collides with the port of Antwerp, causing damage to the port facilities. After the battle ends, the 501st JFW was officially reunited again, with Shizuka joining Mio's place. However, due to damage to the port facilities, the planned counteroffensive operation was forced to be postponed, and was stationed at a base in Den Helder, Nederlands.

Operation Southwind was finally issued, and initially the B-17 Superfortress formation cleared the clouds covering the Neuroi nest "Wolf" by bombing, and the 501st members launched an assault on Wolf that had appeared, but a large number withdrew because the B-17 formation suffered a great deal of damage due to the interception of the wall-shaped Neuroi that appeared in. After that, a large Neuroi attacked the Kiel base, but Yoshika's shield prevented it, but she was removed from the operation due to magic power consumption. In the second wave, "Operation Victoria", the Landkreuzer P.1000 Ratte, a decisive weapon, was introduced, and was responsible for the escort of General Gerald S. Patton. He even though that the wall-type Neuroi could be destroyed by the Ratte, Patton and the others were isolated with a shield put up by Wolf. Gertrud suggested going through the underpass to rescue him, leaving Shizuka, whose aircraft had been damaged, through the underpass, engaging with small Neuroi. At that time, Shizuka, who was wearing the Shinden on the ground and rushed in from the shield that had been emptied by the bombing, was severely injured by the Neuroi's attack. At that time, Miyafuji's magic power was revived, and the small Neuroi who reacted to the magic powers went out to the ground toward Miyafuji, but the 501st members followed behind and joined Yoshika.

The final battle unfolds with Wolf, who had transformed into an urban Neuroi, and the main body tried to escape, but Minna, Gertrud, and Erica fired a salvo at the moment when Miyafuji stopped Wolf with a shield, and destroyed this Neuroi nest to retake Berlin. However, since there were still Neuroi nests in Southern Karlsland and in the neighboring country of Ostmark, they did not disband this time and prepared for a new battle while helping Berlin's reconstruction.

The 501st has shot down a large number of Neuroi, and the unit's accomplishments in the Gallian and Venizian recovery operations has given its witches a status akin to living legends, one which is only aided by their individual records and achievements. In addition, it members are regarded as legendary witches and heroines for their feats such as the disappearance of Neuroi's nest and the recovery of stolen land for the first time in humanity.
